Vegan As Fvck is a peaceful animal rights and social justice movement which seeks to exclude, as much as we possibly can, all forms of exploitation and cruelty towards animals. This includes eating animals for food, wearing animal skins (leather, feather, fur, wool and silk), and using products that have been tested on animals.
Almost 60 billion land animals and over 1 trillion marine animals are killed and used as commodities per year. The needless suffering and slaughtering of animals for human consumption presents a multitude of social and environmental issues. It is destructive to our planet since animal agriculture and livestock farming contributes to land and water degradation, biodiversity loss, acid rain, coral reef degeneration, and deforestation.
PETA states that chickens are arguably the most abused animals on the planet. Poultry farming disrupts the family unit among chickens while denying these animals their rightful needs for social interactions and proper nutrition. Sadly, their entire lives are spent living in harsh, cruel confinement until they’re inhumanely slaughtered. In the United States alone, about 9 billion chickens are killed for their flesh each year, and 305 million hens are used for their eggs. Not only are they the most-killed animals for the purposes of feeding humans, but more chickens are killed for food every year than all other land animals combined.
Animals are similar to humans in many ways. We both live to stay alive, seek food and shelter, and raise young for the next generation. Most animals have a sense of who they are and can even distinguish their friends from their rivals. There is much evidence that most animals feel pain, distress and discomfort. Many also feel joy, seek company, like to play, and can use tools. Like us humans, they have conscious mental experiences everyday of their lives.
Pigs, for example, are sentient beings with emotions and empathy similar to dogs. They have been shown to display consistent behavioral and emotional characteristics that have been described variously as personality. They've shown traits such as coping styles, response types, temperament, and behavioral tendencies. Sadly, like all animals waiting to be killed, they feel terror and are extremely frightened when they enter a slaughterhouse.
As forests all around the world are cleared for the purpose of livestock farming, entire populations of animals are killed or displaced. It's estimated that 135 species become extinct due to deforestation every single day.
Animal agriculture is causing destruction to our Earth and its precious natural resources. Raising livestock for meat, eggs and milk generates the second highest source of emissions, which is greater than all transportation combined. It also uses about 70% of agricultural land and is one of the leading causes of deforestation, biodiversity loss, and water pollution.
In addition, aggressive large-scale deforestation is causing major human rights violations with devastating impacts on forest dwelling people and their way of life. Community resistance to land grabs and forest clearing often results in violence being used against them, including: forced evictions, police harassment, intimidation, death threats and violent attacks, arbitrary arrest, and retaliatory litigation and criminalization of community leaders, human rights defenders, and activists.
In regards to health, humans continue to eat meat and dairy products, which have been clinically linked to causing our world's number one killer, heart disease. Meat and dairy consumption has also been medically researched and proven to cause type 2 diabetes, several major cancers (including breast, liver and prostate), and obesity.
Choosing a whole foods plant based diet is not only good for one's health, it's essential for the health and sustainability of Mother Earth and her resources.
